Information About Getting College Credit Through CLEP Tests You may be able to earn college credit toward your associate or bachelor degree by getting a good score on a qualification test, such as those offered by the College Level Evaluation Program (CLEP), which is run by The College Board (the same people that administer the SAT). This way of earning college credit can greatly accelerate your progress toward your online college degree, and save you time and money. Numerous publishers publish books designed to help you learn the material required to earn a qualifying score on such tests. CLEP tests are only available for certain selected college subjects and courses. The courses for which tests are available are mostly freshman and sophomore level courses that are common across many colleges and degrees. Here is a link to purchase the official College Board guide to CLEP-based credit. In addition to the official College Board
guide there are numerous other text books and study guides for each test. The
book in the link below is an example of a guide book for one specific CLEP
subject test. There are many such guides available through this link to Amazon.com
. An advantage for Amazon.com
is that it provides customer (student) reviews for many of the guide books. The reviews may help you
select the best guide for you. College policies vary regarding which courses you may earn CLEP credit for. College policies also vary concerning what fees may be associated with receiving the credits. In selecting an online college you might want to consider how many credits they might accept from CLEP testing. (However, if you already have past credits for most of the courses for which credit may be earned, the CLEP test policies may not matter for you. ) Click here to visit the official College Board site for the CLEP test. The CLEP site indicates all the subjects for which CLEP tests may be available. By requesting info from the featured or other schools you are in a position to learn more about the current and specific policies of the schools. Remember that your college accepts CLEP tests for credit only according to that college's policies. |

Accreditation Authoritative information on college accreditation from the U.S. Department of Education Identify or verify college accreditations at the U.S. Department of Education . This is my opinion: "Accreditation" is essentially a form of certification that an educational institution provides a legitimate and proper education. "Regional accreditation" is a form of accreditation that is widely recognized as the best general form of accreditation. Regional accreditation is provided by one of six private (non-government) accreditation agencies (links to them are provided below). Each of regional accreditation agencies specializes in institutions within a particular region. Each of the regional accreditation agencies recognizes and accepts the others, so the six accreditation agencies work together to form a national system. It is far better to go to a regionally accredited college. Regionally accredited colleges may let you transfer credits from another regionally accredited colleges but are extremely unlikely to accept credits from a non-regionally accredited institution. I have never heard of an employer that won't recognize an undergraduate degree (bachelor or associate) from regionally accredited institutions. They might accept other kinds of degrees too...or maybe not. Higher level and better paying jobs are likely to be more accessible if your degree is from a regionally accredited institution. Nevertheless it is a fact that there are other sources
of legitimate accreditation, as stated and identified by the US Department of
Education. If
you even consider a college that does NOT have regional accreditation it should
at least have accreditation from one of the sources
recognized by the Department of
Education. It is probably true that there are non-regionally accredited schools that can give you a great education, but the problem is that you may end up well-educated with a degree that may not be recognized ... so you may not be able to benefit the way you would expect. Never-the-less, I believe that valid institutions exist that do not have regional accreditation. Therefore, I cannot say NEVER consider such an institution. However if you value recognition as well as education ... if you value having the possibility being able to transfer your credits to another good institution if you need to ... if you are going to go to all the effort and expense of getting a valid education anyway ... my opinion is "go with the sure fire regional accreditation", accept no substitute. The Famous Six Regional Accreditation Authorities New England Association of Schools & Colleges accreditation of colleges, universities and other degree granting institutions of higher education in the New England region. FINANCIAL AID IN THE USA - Usually, you have to be at least a half-time
student (6 semester hours per semester) in order to qualify for any
financial aid. THE BEST PLACE to learn about financial aid is, usually,
the institution to which you apply, because they (usually) know that your
financial aid is their life blood. They get very good at finding money!!

Note: Any descriptions or mention of tuition levels or discounts
are based on online degree programs at featured schools, reflect the subjective
opinion of this author, and are not necessarily comprehensive (there may be
other discounts or low tuitions I am not aware of or have missed). Tuition
level and discounts are subject to change without notice by the colleges, and
may not reflect all considerations of financial aid. The best, most
accurate, and final source of tuition information is to request the
information from the school in question.
I intend to include on this site colleges and universities that apparently
have regional accreditation, however the presence of a university, college, or
other site on this page is not an endorsement or recommendation. College links
are here only to present possible college and university sites that may be of
interest to some of those seeking an accredited online college degree. The
number of accredited online and distance college degree programs offered is
increasing so quickly that it is difficult to keep up. The site
is primarily concerned with degree programs, although you may find degree and
certificate programs, as well as leads to non-degree seeking classes or courses
at the sites. So, this site may be useful to those seeking a class, course, or
certificate. You may find that a college or university is presented redundantly
on this sites simply due to the order in which I discovered them, or because I
preferred to identify individual university sites in addition to or instead of
an online consortium or association site. A college or university may use the
term external degree program where another may use the term distance program.
The terms external and distance are considered nominally equivalent on this site.
These college links may not be perfectly up to date and there
could be unintended errors. We believe these are all good schools with regional
accreditation, which is generally recognized as the highest general form of
institutional accreditation. No statement here should be regarded as an
specific endorsement of the school for you.
I believe the information on this site is accurate, but I do not
guarantee it.
If you elect to request the free info from a college or university, and
especially if they are interested in recruiting you as a student, they may give
you a telephone call in addition to sending email or regular mail information.
In requesting the info package or packet you are, in effect, giving them
permission to give you a phone call. This phone will enable you to direct to the
school any questions that are of specific interest to you, and also enable you
to ask questions about additional degree programs the online graduate school may
offer. Recent research indicates an association between advancing education and
increases in average salary, however no college or university can guarantee a
specific salary or an increase because that is likely to depend on a number of
factors including education, but also including region, job experience,
opportunities, individual characteristics, personal history, etc.
